Sports Clubs & Teams

Yoga has profound benefits for athletes and is a great addition to the training week. I have always practised Yoga alongside any sport I have been involved in to look after my body after high loads of training and help me go into the next session feeling fresh.

Working with other athletes - whether they be football teams, runners or gym-goers, I have had the opportunity to see how it can be of benefit across different sports. The most notable changes are better stride, reduction in back pain and stiffness, faster recovery and improved core strength.

It comes as no surprise. Weekly dedication to an athletes program involves focus on deep breathing, moving the body across different planes to work on mobility, balance and core strength and deep rest and relaxation. Yoga and deep breathing helps to relax the nervous system and lowers stress hormones which in turn facilitates the perfect conditions for recovery. It is a great way to provide different stimulus and new ways of moving that differs to the athlete's dominant sport.

Hear what the students have to say. Here are some testimonials from St. Pats GFC senior team who planned on completing a 5-week block of specially-tailored classes and ended up continuing for 4 months because they found so much benefit from the sessions.

What is involved?

Each class begins with meditation and breathwork, accompanied by essential oils. The middle section consists of a warmup, main body and cool-down stretches which will incorporate work on stretching, mobility, balance, stability and core work. I always end with 'Savasana' or a relaxation at the end to integrate everything that was done during class and then a short meditation. It is a great blend of sport-specific asanas to strengthen and open up the body while adhering to traditional Yogic philosophy. Students will also learn about meditation and the benefits of relaxation for the mind and nervous system.

Athletes will notice benefits after their first class but I would recommend committing to a five-week block to really notice changes both physically and mentally.
